Over thousands of years, cities, trade routes, languages and cultures met across the land that is now Syria. From the coast to the Euphrates, archaeological sites preserve traces of people and ideas within a wider history shared by the region.

Tablets from Ras Shamra near Latakia show a 30-sign alphabetic cuneiform script, an important early example of alphabetic writing.
